4 According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love:
This verse clearly shows that salvation through Jesus Christ was not Plan B but was always God’s intention. Before he created the world, God already knew what he would do. It’s incredible to think that we were in his thoughts even before time began. It boggles the mind!
The Greek word “chosen” has certain connotations that aren’t so obvious in English. First of all, it implies a choosing for oneself with the additional notion of kindness and love. Moreover, it refers to an appointment for a task or purpose. Paul then goes on the say what that task is. The word “holy” means “separated,” as in separated from sin and set apart for God.
So, in summary, Paul shows us how God had an incredible plan from before time began. Out of love and kindness, he found a way to set apart for himself a people who would be devoted to him and enjoy his presence.
I find it amazing that God created us despite knowing we would rebel. I don’t know about you, but I would have had second thoughts, whereas he came up with the perfect plan.
