Is Jesus Really Coming Back?

As I observe the world around me, I get the impression that most people—even some who call themselves Christians—have no clue that many prophecies point to the return of Jesus Christ on earth. People think that Jesus is exclusively part of the past, not realizing that his first coming fulfilled only part of the prophecies concerning the Messiah. But should we really expect his return? Let’s look at a few ways in which our present world closely resembles the society that precedes the return of Christ and is described in Revelation.

Before we get into the details, I need to point out that no one knows when his coming will be. Jesus himself said that the times and dates are unknown, but he warned us that there will nonetheless be signs indicating that the time is near. (1) Just as we can tell when spring is around the corner, so we’ll be able to recognize that Jesus’ appearance is sooner rather than later. Of course, “sooner” is a relative term—his return could be next year or in a hundred years, but the signs are clear: Jesus is coming.

So, let’s briefly examine what the world will be like right before the return of Christ. This list is not meant to be exhaustive or in any particular order.

An interconnected world with instant communication. (2) The advent of television and the internet has made it possible for everyone all over the world to see the same things at the same time. Even a century ago, such a feat would have been impossible.

A centralized one-world authority. (3) There is no lack of globalist organizations trying to concentrate worldwide authority under one entity, with varying degrees of success. Two examples are the World Economic Forum, which greatly influences the world’s top political and business leaders, and the World Health Organization, which wants all countries to ratify its upcoming treaty giving the WHO control over all health decisions during a health emergency. I’m not implying that these two groups are mentioned in the Bible. I’m just pointing out that our planet is marching straight toward a central authority.

Totalitarianism. (4) Fortunately, we’re not there yet, at least not in many parts of the world. But the pandemic has shown us how easily governments can sweep away our civil rights—all they need to do is declare a national emergency. And the enthusiasm demonstrated by large portions of society, government, and the press over the censorship of anyone who disagrees with the official narrative is troubling. It doesn’t bode well for the future of free speech.

A tightly controlled economic system. (5) Central banks are hard at work laying the foundation for the introduction of Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDC). China has already introduced a digital yuan. Once the system is fully in place and CBDCs replace cash, governments will have complete control over our finances. No one will be able to buy or sell anything without their permission.

Environmental catastrophes. (6)  Floods, earthquakes, hurricanes, and other natural disasters have been with us since the beginning of time, but they will occur more frequently and on a larger scale. The Bible prophecies sound a lot like the most pessimistic of the climate-change alarmists.

Be ready. My purpose for writing this post isn’t to spread gloom and doom (there’s enough of that in the world already!). I simply hope to remind us that Jesus will return someday—it’s not a fairy tale—and the world is looking more and more like the biblical prophecies. Why is this important? Because we better be ready.

Fortunately, there’s good news. Jesus has done everything necessary to enable us to face him with joy instead of fear. By his death on the cross, he removed the barrier between us and God—our sin—and all he asks in return is for us to trust and follow him. Sure, such a decision can be scary because we must give him control of our lives, but when we realize how much he loves us and cares for our well-being, our apprehension disappears. Trusting him is the best choice we can ever make.

It’s also important to remember that Jesus is returning to rule as king. (7) Everyone, including all the world leaders, will bow down before him and recognize his authority. He will heal and renew all the damage we have done to our planet and punish all evil. Isn’t it to our advantage to be on his side?
