Childhood Misbehaving

One of the most endearing traits of children is their honesty, although there are times when parents wished their offspring were a little less transparent for all to see. This is one of those occasions when my mom and dad probably felt like crawling under the rug.

We had guests over for dinner on that particular day, and like any good hosts my parents were hoping to make a good impression. This task was made more difficult by the presence of a rebellious child (yes, that would be me). I don’t remember why I was causing so many problems, but it got to the point where I had to be sent to my room as punishment. As I got up from the table to leave, my mom asked me in an exasperated voice:

“Carol, why can’t you be good at the very least when we have guests?”

I looked back at her from the doorway where I was standing, and trying to muster as much attitude as I possibly could I answered:

“Because I don’t want to be a hypocrite!”

I cannot believe you were misbehaving, although I can believe you used a word like hypocrite!

Big word for a little girl! This proves where you were reared! Where else would you learn that defiant word?
